Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter as i read an article of yours in national newspaper which claims that towns in my country look very similar. I do agree that all centers may have malls, restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery stores but every place has its own characteristics. I believe that some town centers have their own traditional stories and charm.

For example, my town, Brampton, is different from many other places in Canada. There are so many Indian restaurants, temples, gurudwaras, and Indian clothing shops situated in this City. It shows how different people from various places live together and celebrate and respect each other's traditions and culture as compared to many other cities in Canada.

Moreover, i would like to invite you to my town and will give you a guided tour so that you may know more about how Brampton is different from most of the places in Canada. It will be a wholesome experience for you, and i will really appreciate it if you write about this in your future articles and be more specific about how my town is different from all other places.

Yours sincerely,

Mahi Sharma.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear: you partly agree that town centres share common facilities, but argue that each retains distinctive qualities. You address all three points by acknowledging malls and shops, describing Brampton’s Indian restaurants, temples, gurudwaras and clothing shops, and offering the writer a guided tour. The examples make the difference relevant and understandable. To develop the response further, explain more specifically how these features shape the town’s atmosphere or distinguish its centre from the places mentioned in the article. The request that the writer be “more specific” is clear, though the letter could connect this more directly to the article’s particular claims. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a consistent viewpoint and supported ideas, although some support remains general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce your response to the article, give Brampton as an example, and then make your invitation. Paragraphing supports this structure, and linking expressions such as “For example” and “Moreover” help readers follow the shift between points. The contrast between shared facilities and local character also gives the argument a logical thread. Some connections could be more precise: “It shows” refers broadly to the list of cultural places, while the following idea about people living together could be linked more explicitly to how these features make the town centre distinctive. The closing request also adds a new point rather abruptly. Overall, organisation is clear and cohesive, with room to make some links less formulaic and more exact.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss shared amenities and local identity, including “traditional stories and charm,” “celebrate,” and “traditions and culture.” Specific terms such as “gurudwaras” and “Indian clothing shops” help make the description concrete. There is also some awareness of an appropriately formal letter style. However, several expressions are broad or slightly unnatural, including “all centers,” “different from many other places,” and “wholesome experience.” More precise wording would make the comparison and invitation sound more fluent and purposeful. The phrase “in this City” also has an unnecessary capital letter, and “i” should be capitalised; these are spelling and written-form issues rather than grammar. Your vocabulary communicates the message clearly, but greater precision and natural collocation would strengthen it.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “I do agree that … but every place has its own characteristics” and the purpose clause “so that you may know more.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors do not prevent the reader from following your message. Some errors remain, however. “Hope you are doing well” omits the subject, and “as i read” needs a capitalised pronoun and a more suitable tense in this context. In “I would like to invite you … and will give you,” the verb forms do not align smoothly; use “and give you” or “and would give you.” The long sentence beginning “It shows” also needs clearer grammatical linking. More consistent control of verb forms and sentence construction would improve accuracy.
