IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have just read an article in a national newspaper which claims that town centres in your country all look very similar to each other. You don't fully agree with this opinion.
Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. In your letter
- say which points in the article you agree with
- explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
- offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this to show my unsatisfactory review on your recently published article. An article claim that all town centers around the country are visibly same. However, I am not fully convinced with claim.
My objection doesn't mean that the writter is fully wrong about the central idea. I do agree on some points of the article. Such as; Each town center is named after popular cities around the world, and malls and cafe's are the central attraction of every town center.
However, there are differences among the town centers that writter failed to observe. For example: In the town center where I live, there's clock house in the center of our town that no other town has. Additionally, in our town roads are designed in different style whereas most of the other town centers has European styled roads.
I would love to invite the writter of this article to visit our town. I will arrange a guided tour for him to make-sure he observes everything in detail.
Let me know if he's interested to visit our town.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Owais Ansari

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three required points and make your position clear: you partly accept the article’s claim but argue that your town has distinctive features. The examples of a clock house and differently designed roads support your disagreement, and the offer to arrange a guided tour completes the task. This meets the core requirements well. However, some points are not fully explained: the claim that town centres are named after popular cities is difficult to understand, and the contrast between your roads and “European styled roads” could be made more specific. Developing these details and explaining more clearly which parts of the article you accept would make the response more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce your response to the article, acknowledge points of agreement, present differences, and then make the tour offer. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “However” and “Additionally” signal the shift to your counterargument. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some connections are less smooth, particularly “Such as;” before the examples, which does not integrate them grammatically into the preceding sentence. The final invitation and request for a reply are also somewhat repetitive. Use complete, well-linked sentences for examples and combine closely related closing ideas to make cohesion more flexible and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the topic and purpose, including “central attraction,” “guided tour,” and “published article.” These choices help communicate your main points. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “unsatisfactory review” for your response to an article, “visibly same,” and “European styled roads.” There are also spelling and form errors, including “writter” and “cafe’s,” which reduce the precision of the writing. The range is adequate for the task, but greater control of natural collocations and accurate spelling would strengthen it. Prefer straightforward, precise expressions over phrases that sound translated or do not fit the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some more developed structures, including “Although” is not used, but the contrast is expressed through “However” and the relative clause in “the town center where I live.” Most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, though: “An article claim” needs subject–verb agreement, “I do agree on some points” uses an incorrect preposition, and “most of the other town centers has” has an agreement error. The fragment “Such as; Each town center…” and the punctuation after “For example” also affect sentence control. Review agreement, prepositions, and how examples are attached to complete sentences; these corrections would improve accuracy while preserving your clear message.
