Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with what you published in the national newspaper, where you said that all the town centres in my country looks similar to each other.

I strongly agreed with where you said that all the town centres in my country have a common paints which is green white green. Why it is like that is because of the new government policy that mandates all the mayors to paint the town centres the same colour to make them look unique and appealing to tourists.

But, i disagree with you on other areas, like the building plans. My town centre has a lot of skycrapers, unlike other town centres that has less. And we enjoy night life in my town centre because there is a lot light in the night, you wouldn't even know that it is late.

Because of this is your opinion about my town, I am offering you a free tour guide to my town centre, so that i can show you the beauty of my town, and you will know that my town is diffrent from other town centres in the country. I am free every weekend, just let me know when you will be coming.

Yours faithfully,

Frank

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you identify agreement with the article’s observation about shared colours, explain differences in your town’s buildings and nightlife, and offer the writer a weekend tour. Your position is clear overall, especially in the contrast introduced by “But, I disagree.” The explanation of the common colour scheme is supported with a reason, while the differences are less fully developed: “a lot of skyscrapers” and “a lot light in the night” would be more convincing with a specific example or detail. The opening also calls the article’s claim “all” centres looking alike, but your response could distinguish more precisely between the features you accept and those you dispute. Developing the town-specific evidence further would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens by stating its purpose, presents the point of agreement, moves to disagreement and local differences, and ends with the tour offer. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “But” and “Because of this” signal the main shifts. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “Because of this is your opinion about my town” is difficult to follow, and the repeated references to “my town centre” and “other town centres” make parts of the letter sound mechanical. A clearer transition into the invitation, such as directly linking the tour to the differences described, would improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “government policy,” “mayors,” “appealing to tourists,” “skyscrapers” and “night life.” These choices show some range beyond very basic language. However, several noticeable word-choice, collocation and spelling problems limit precision: “common paints” does not express a shared colour scheme, “a lot light” is not a natural phrase, and “diffrent” and “skycrapers” are misspelled. “Dissatisfaction” also sounds stronger and more confrontational than needed for a letter that mainly disagrees with an article. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling; this will make your meaning clearer and your tone more appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example the explanation beginning “Why it is like that is because…” and the sentence describing the government policy. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. In “all the town centres … looks similar,” the plural subject needs a plural verb; “other town centres that has less” has the same agreement issue. The sentence “Because of this is your opinion about my town” is structurally unclear, and “there is a lot light” is missing a grammatical element. Capitalisation of “i” is also inconsistent. Practise subject–verb agreement and build complex sentences around a clear main clause; more consistent control would make the letter easier to read.
