IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people like to try new things, for example, places to visit and types of food. Other people prefer to keep doing things they are familiar with.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are deferent opinion regarding doing things. Some people believe to try new things whereas, other group of thinkers support keep doing things they are familiar with. However, both has it's own pros and cons. Therefore, before commenting on my decision both the parties would be discussed.

Examine the primary opinion, in which some people love to explore the new things. For instance, an extrovert person who love to explore the new places and try different cuisine from all around the world is always eager to try different things from all around the world. In addition to this, that person must be rich and having spare time to explore the places and having different cuisine. Another point is, either having a passion to do something new or a skillset to learn a ordinary thing which is more important to try different things.

On contrary, increasing number of people don't want to try a new things in their life and they just want to do the things in which they are familiar with. There are two sides of coin, the person don't earn sufficient money to pursue a new activity or explore the new places, they should be stick with their routine. On the other hand, if person don't have an initiative to learn new skill then they would be not able to do something new apart from their daily routine.

To conclude and give my opinion, the thinking of both type of person is acceptable. If a person having money and extra time, they are explore the world and having fun. Another type of people are restricted them self by learning new skill or explore places because of finance problem.

Phrases like 'Examine the primary opinion' and 'On contrary' are used incorrectly or sound unnatural. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the connection between the two types of people and their motivations is muddled. While there is an overall progression, the lack of smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs makes the flow feel disjointed at times.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'deferent opinion' instead of 'different opinions' and 'a ordinary thing' instead of 'an ordinary thing'. The range of vocabulary is limited, with frequent repetition of basic terms like 'explore', 'things', and 'people'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more precise synonyms and collocations, such as 'novel experiences' instead of 'new things' or 'financial constraints' instead of 'finance problem'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('both has it's own', 'person don't earn'), article usage ('a new things'), and awkward phrasing ('they are explore the world'). While the meaning is generally understandable, these recurring errors indicate a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the quality of your writing.
