Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some Individuals prefer to continue doing things they are familiar with. Other Individuals like to try out new things, for example visitation of places and types of foods. This Essay will discuss both sides of the arguement. I think that it is better to try out new things.

On the one hand, Trying out new things bring about Innovation and societal growth. The world today has experienced a great deal of innovation which is as a result of the experiment carried out round the world. These innovations have cut across various sectors such as Health, Engineering etc. Since humans started to explore the world, there have been significant growth in various aspects. The airplanes and private Jets we use today are as a result of various experiment and the constant struggle to try out new ideideas. For example, the penicillin antibiotics was accidentally discovered by a scientist who was experimenting on an entirely different project.Furthermore, trying out new things bring out personal growth. Many people have learnt a great deal from exploring new things. When people move from place to place they tend to embrace new ideas that can be for the betterment of their home country. These exploration involves also the food we eat. Eating foods from other cultural backgrounds can be of many health benefits and it also gives room for versatility.

On the other hand, Doing familiar things is cost effective. It costs way less to focus on already known ideas, foods or places. A lot of money is spent on various experiment which sometimes do not yield anything positive Furthermore, continuing with familiar things is stress free. It takes a whole effort to explore new innovation and this includes physical and mental efforts. Going by what is already know gives one certain kind of peace as there is barely any risk involve.

In conclusion, exploring new things bring out Innovation and societal growth as well as personal growth . Doing familiar things is cost effective and stress free. I think that it is better try new things.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both attitudes and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the link between innovation and societal growth, and the benefits of familiarity regarding cost and stress. However, some arguments are slightly under-developed; for instance, the connection between eating foreign food and 'versatility' could be explained more clearly. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting example is fully linked back to the main argument to provide more depth and avoid minor over-generalizations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between sentences in the second paragraph could be tightened to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good topic-specific terms like 'innovation,' 'societal growth,' and 'versatility.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'visitation of places' (better: 'visiting new places') and 'experiment carried out' (should be plural: 'experiments'). There are also some spelling errors like 'ideideas' and 'know' instead of 'known.' To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your spelling is accurate, as these small slips prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher, more sophisticated level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Trying out new things bring' should be 'brings') and missing articles ('the penicillin antibiotics' should be 'penicillin'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some minor errors, such as missing spaces after commas. The range of structures is sufficient, but more consistent control over complex grammatical forms would be required for a higher band score. Focus on proofreading for basic agreement and article usage.
