Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both attitudes and providing a personal opinion. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the negative consequences of trying new things focuses heavily on 'junk food' and 'obesity,' which is a narrow interpretation of the prompt's broader theme of 'new things.' While the ideas are relevant, they could be extended with more sophisticated reasoning or broader examples to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points and provides a balanced perspective.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In addition' helps to guide the reader through the argument. However, there is some mechanical use of these devices, and the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by grammatical errors. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions feel slightly repetitive. Overall, the essay maintains a coherent structure that allows the reader to follow the writer's train of thought without significant difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. The student uses basic phrases such as 'different type of things' and 'outsider food' repeatedly, which limits the sophistication of the writing. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'visit on locations' and 'hustle bustle life.' While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is restricted, and the student struggles to use less common lexical items accurately. Expanding the range of synonyms and learning more formal collocations would significantly improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'Certain individuals are love to seek,' 'try many type of things are good,' and 'many people who are spending amount of money.' Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. While the writer attempts complex sentences, these are often marred by errors in syntax or word form. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring correct verb forms and proper pluralization.
