IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people like to try new things, for example, places to visit and types of food. Other people prefer to keep doing things they are familiar with.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that many individuals would explore new things such as visiting different new places as well as varieties of food whereas some like to do things they are familiar with. In my opinion, it is completely based on their personality, experiences and lifestyle.

First and foremost, there are clear reasons why most of the people like to experience new things. Firstly, people who are more likely an extrovert and has the most outgoing personality would have the curiosity to go and try out new destinations. For example, a person who loves to travel would like to prefer going on a vacation across the country learn new skills, or participate in activities or even would like to try out different cuisine. As a result, they are more open minded or develop a broader understanding of the world.

Furthermore, I believe that people have different attitudes and beliefs when it comes to getting out of their comfort zone. The primary reason is that some people are willing to take less risk because they like to stick to their familiar activities and feel secure. To illustrate, they choose to go out to their favourite restaurants and try out their same meal on a daily basis. Additionally, it also mainly based on their lifestyle as they would feel less stress and enjoy their routine and predictability. Consequently, this will make them miss out new experiences and less willing to take risk.

In conclusion, while some people would go and explore different countries or even learn new skill and enjoy having various food it will make them feel more adventurous and learn new perspectives of world whereas there are still some other people who like to enjoy their own company and own routine without having stress and feel safe and secure.

However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the final sentence of the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Additionally, the conclusion is a single, very long sentence that lacks clear punctuation, which makes it slightly difficult to follow. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring sentence boundaries are clear will enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'extrovert', 'predictability', and 'perspectives'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'most of the people like to experience' (should be 'most people like to experience') and 'it is completely based on' (should be 'it is entirely dependent on'). You also repeat certain words like 'new' and 'people' quite frequently. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and collocations to express your ideas with greater sophistication and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'people who are more likely an extrovert and has the most outgoing personality' contains subject-verb agreement issues and awkward phrasing. There are also errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'learn new skill' (should be 'learn new skills') and 'on a daily basis' (which is fine, but the surrounding context is clunky).
