Student answer (Band 7.0)

There is an ongoing discussion regarding how some people like to explore and experiment in life, whereas some people like the routine and the comfort of familiarity in life. However, attempting or exploring in life is important; it gives you the opportunity to see life in a different light.

On one hand, there are people who like to seek out novel experiences, such as unfamiliar cuisines and travel destinations or various adventures. These are the ones who expand their knowledge and skills from the various experiences and utilize it to improve their potential. For example, when people try a new dish and like it, that expands their cuisine vocabulary and can be useful during business opportunities.

On the other hand, there are people who choose to maintain a lifestyle built around familiar habits and routines. Remaining in their comfort zone helps them with stability, peace of mind and a sense of security as they are aware of their next steps.

In my opinion, following and sticking to the routine is good, but along with that, people also should consider exploring new places, activities or cultures, which can give them exposure to a different perspective and keep them updated on the ongoing trends. For instance, when they travel to a new place, they meet new people who guide them and share their experiences, which can further tell them about the culture of the place, and it also works as networking.

In conclusion, I believe people should always try to explore new things in life whenever and whereever possible while following the routine to keep growing and learning.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both attitudes toward novelty and routine while providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though some development is slightly brief. For instance, the example regarding 'business opportunities' linked to trying a new dish is a bit tenuous and could have been more effectively explained. However, the position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the arguments. To reach a higher band, ensure that examples are more logically connected to the main points to provide deeper support for your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to signal shifts in the argument. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could benefit from more varied linking words to improve the flow between ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some good collocations like 'novel experiences', 'comfort zone', and 'sense of security'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat words like 'life' and 'people'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and topic-specific vocabulary related to psychology or lifestyle choices. The word choice is generally accurate, but there is a lack of less common lexical items that would demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show control over basic grammar, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. For example, the use of conditional structures and relative clauses is generally correct. However, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrasing (e.g., 'whereever possible' contains a spelling error). To achieve a higher score, aim to use a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or inverted conditionals, and ensure punctuation is consistently accurate throughout the text.
