Student answer (Band 7.0)

It has become increasingly popular among some people to give a try to the things never done before, such as trying cuisines from other places or visiting other countries, while others prefer to keep things simple and follow the routine of performing activities they are aware of. Both these views have their own merits; I believe trying different things and visiting other countries offers a different perspective about other cultures, their history, and their food.

On the one hand, the proponents of doing familiar activities believe in keeping things normal. This is primarily because they have occupied work schedules and continue to juggle to maintain work-life balance. This might be sometimes because of financial constraints; a person has to work long hours and does not have time to do other activities. Furthermore, they do not want to spend money on such things which they think might not be worth it. For instance, an individual would prefer to eat in a restaurant where he already had experienced exceptional customer service and quality of food. Consequently, they prefer to do familiar things.

On the other hand, the supporters of doing new things believe in exploring different places and other countries to learn about their cultures, their traditional cooking methods and food. Some people do this as part of their academics or work. For example, a history student will visit other countries in order to document the local histories, and content creators will make content by recording videos of their journeys and post it on social media such as YouTube to generate income. I believe this view is more convincing because this offers a different perspective to see the world and also a chance to generate income from other streams apart from doing corporate jobs while sitting in an office.

In conclusion, although performing familiar tasks offers you peace of mind and some financial stability. In my opinion, trying other activities will broaden the view to see the world and also give a chance to get paid for the things a person loves.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both attitudes and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. For instance, the explanation regarding work-life balance and financial constraints provides a logical basis for why some prefer routine. The second body paragraph effectively links the desire for new experiences to modern career paths like content creation. To reach a higher band, ensure that the personal opinion is integrated more seamlessly into the body paragraphs rather than just the introduction and conclusion, and provide slightly more depth to the 'familiarity' argument to balance the discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'Consequently' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there are minor issues with cohesion in the conclusion, where the first sentence is a fragment ('In conclusion, although performing familiar tasks offers you peace of mind and some financial stability.') which disrupts the flow. Improving the connection between these clauses would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey ideas with reasonable precision. You use some good collocations like 'occupied work schedules', 'financial constraints', and 'broaden the view'. However, there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'give a try to the things never done before' (better: 'try new experiences') and 'perform activities they are aware of' (better: 'stick to familiar routines'). The range is adequate for the task, but incorporating more sophisticated, less common lexical items would help elevate the score to the next level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, but there are recurring errors that slightly impede the flow. For example, 'spend money on such things which they think' is slightly clunky, and the sentence in the conclusion starting with 'Although' is a dependent clause left without a main clause. Additionally, there are minor articles and preposition errors, such as 'a different perspective about' (should be 'on') and 'the things never done before'. Increasing the variety of error-free complex structures will improve this score.
