Student answer (Band 7.0)

It has been noticed that some people like to experience different things in their life such as different cuisines and landscapes. Another group of individuals prefers to stick with the things they are familiar with and comfortable with. From my perspective, it is always better to try something new because it helps us to gain unique experiences and broaden our horizons.

To commence with, experiencing similar things repeatedly may not only lead to boredom but also to limited knowledge. Visiting the same place every year for vacation and trying the same type of food can limit an individual's adaptability and sense of appreciation towards other cultures and their people. This means that such people may develop a prejudice against other communities, because they never get a chance to know about their culture and values. For instance, many individuals who migrate to diverse countries from isolated areas, may find it significantly difficult to adjust, in terms of food, language and values. This is because they had never traveled and experienced such an environment before in their lives.

On the other hand, individuals who are always open to trying out new experiences and cuisines may have a broader perspective along with better understanding of others' culture, weather and moral values. Such individuals may have higher chances of success in both personal and professional aspects of life. They can stand out more in the crowd because of their knowledge, experiences and behavior. Likewise, traveling to different locations can help individuals to develop multiple life skills such as problem-solving, critical-thinking and harmony.

To sum up, being rigid and avoiding new experiences can affect our behavior and limit our knowledge.I personally believe that we should develop an adaptable nature and this is only possible by trying and experiencing new activities. Doing so, individuals can enhance their knowledge and skills.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both attitudes and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the link between routine and limited adaptability, and the benefits of new experiences for personal growth. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat general. For instance, the claim that people who stick to routines may develop 'prejudice' is a strong assertion that could have been supported with a more concrete or nuanced example to reach a higher band. Overall, the position is consistent throughout, and the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two perspectives. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with,' 'On the other hand,' and 'To sum up' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the drawbacks of rigidity to the benefits of adaptability. Referencing is generally accurate, and the flow between sentences is smooth, making the text easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'adaptability,' 'broaden our horizons,' 'diverse countries,' and 'critical-thinking.' There is an attempt to use less common collocations, which is generally successful. While the vocabulary is functional and precise enough to convey the intended meaning without difficulty, it does not consistently demonstrate the 'skilful use of uncommon items' required for a band 8.0. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a good command of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional-like structures and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'This is because they had never traveled...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as the missing space after the period in the final paragraph ('knowledge.I personally'), but these are rare and do not affect the overall clarity of the writing. The control of punctuation and sentence variety is consistent with a band 7 level.
