Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it discusses both attitudes toward trying new things versus familiarity and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, though some arguments are repetitive. For instance, the explanation of why people prefer familiar things is slightly circular, focusing heavily on 'satisfaction' and 'security' without exploring deeper psychological reasons. However, the position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion clearly states the writer's preference. To reach a higher band, the writer should aim to provide more nuanced examples and avoid over-generalizing about why people choose one path over the other.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'on the other hand', 'additionally', and 'to conclude'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as 'Prior to my stance' in the introduction, which is not a standard academic phrase. Furthermore, the progression of ideas within paragraphs is occasionally hindered by repetitive phrasing. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'that activitys') is more precise.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'differet', 'adtitudes', 'appaupriate', 'thigs', 'qurious', 'pleople', 'gurden', 'fevorite', 'obssesd'). While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are noticeable and detract from the overall quality. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors like 'exciting', 'interesting', and 'new'. To improve, the student should focus on learning more sophisticated synonyms and ensuring accurate spelling of common academic terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Every person have', 'some people are like they hardly immpress'), incorrect word forms (e.g., 'they are become qurious'), and punctuation errors. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur with enough frequency to be distracting. The writer attempts complex sentences, but they often contain errors that affect clarity. Improving control over basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly enhance the score.
