Student answer (Band 6.0)

A school of thought suggest that some people attract towards exploring places and different cuisines. Whilst other individuals don't want to try new things.

Firstly, people who prefer to try new things generally they are from younger generation. Because they are enthusiastic and easy to move on. They don't want to find comfort as they love to explore. For instance, my younger brother who is in his teenage years, he visited every corner of our state as he loves to travel. On the other hand, my parents only go for two or three locations in our city every other weekend.

Secondly, the other side of individuals are usually adults which are in mid 30s to late 50s. Because they have explored enough in their prime younger days and now they feel familiarity in some places and foods which they don't want to change. They want to keep doing it because some places and food are special for them. For example, me and my wife are visiting Mehfil Restaurant in our city since 2015 when we started dating each other. Our first date was there so that restaurant and specially the main course dish called "Paneer Butter Masala" is close to our hearts and it's delicious. We tried few other places but we went back every time to our place. So for me, not to try new things is not a big deal.

All in all, this topic is very subjective. It depends on person's age, lifestyle, mood, financial position etc. Personally I think doing familiar things are better option than spending time and money to explore something new and in return you get disappointment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: discussing the two attitudes and providing a personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and supported by personal examples, such as the brother's travel habits and the restaurant experience. However, the development is somewhat simplistic. The arguments rely heavily on personal anecdotes rather than broader societal analysis, which limits the depth of the discussion. The position is clear throughout, but the conclusion could be more nuanced to better reflect the complexity of the topic. Overall, the response meets the requirements but remains at a fairly basic level of development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'All in all', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Because they are enthusiastic and easy to move on' at the start of a sentence. Referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'things', 'places', and 'food'. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific language, such as 'school of thought' and 'subjective', the overall range is limited. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'attract towards' instead of 'are attracted to' and 'easy to move on', which sounds unnatural in this context. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more sophisticated collocations and a wider range of synonyms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('A school of thought suggest'), incorrect preposition usage ('attract towards'), and awkward phrasing ('me and my wife are visiting'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and issues with sentence fragments. While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. More attention to verb tenses and sentence construction is needed.
