Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some members of the society like to try different things such as food or vacation spots whereas others choose to do things which they have done in past. This essay will discuss both the viewpoints and in my opinion, people should try out different things to break the monotony of daily life.

To commence with, the main reason why some people like to try new things is that they are not afraid of taking risks. To elaborate, since trying a new dish or a product gives them a unique experience every time, they have a wider range of experiences in life. These people have a risk taking attitude and some might end up finding better food and services due to this. To exemplify, young people who often travel to new destinations end up exploring myriad places and gaining more knowledge than those who prefer to visit a limited number of spots.

On the other hand, some individuals prefer to order food or visit a place which they have tried in past to avoid any bad experiences. They feel that it is not worth taking a risk. For instance, people with families prefer not take risks when it comes to food, travel or some daily life products because sometimes they simply cannot afford losing money and time on a failed experiment. Hence, they only choose things which they trust.

To conclude, this essay has discussed that some people are risk takers that is why they try new things. On the contrary, some citizens repeat their trusted food or product because they have more responsibilities and they fear to lose money and time. In my opinion, people should take calculated risks of trying out new food or places so that they can break the usual routine and experience new things in life. This will help them learn fro their experiences and make more memories in life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both attitudes and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically extended. For example, the contrast between the 'risk-taking' nature of those who try new things and the 'security-seeking' nature of those who prefer familiarity is well-developed. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific, nuanced examples rather than general statements about 'young people' or 'families' to further demonstrate the depth of their argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'On the other hand', and 'Hence' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For instance, the link between the conclusion and the body paragraphs is clear, but the internal cohesion within the second paragraph could be improved by varying the sentence structure more effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses some good collocations like 'break the monotony', 'calculated risks', and 'unique experience'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is occasional repetition of basic words like 'things' and 'food'. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more precise synonyms and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range. For example, instead of 'things', words like 'activities', 'endeavors', or 'experiences' could be used to add variety and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. For example, 'some members of the society' and 'people with families prefer not take risks' (missing 'to') are minor slips. The use of complex sentences is evident, such as 'since trying a new dish... gives them a unique experience'. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim for more consistent accuracy in complex structures and ensure that minor errors, such as missing prepositions or articles, are eliminated.
