Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals like to take a risk and they always try to explore different things, while others prefer to try things which are familiar. In this essay, I will discuss both the views and give my opinion.

On the one side, people have become risk takers nowadays. People who like to explore something new are very creative and good at decision making. Because of this kind of attitude, they can become successful in there life. For instance, person with creative ideas, who is working at higher level of position in the company with higher package, has more money and time as well. That can give him great amount of the freedom to explore different foods and places. Furthermore, this kind of people never hesitate to take any kind of risk irrespective of any field or anywhere.

On the other side, there are several advantages of trying only things which they have tried before. First of all, people don't want to explore new things because of bad experience they can face. For example, individuals with big family don't want to try new restaurant because sometimes we might get bad experience of the food as well as the service that can create bad impression of you. Consequently, person will be loosing money as well as trust of the family members. Apart from this, some people prefer not to do new business because person has a fear of wasting time and money which are the biggest factors. Moreover, it's better to have some knowledge about any new place otherwise we might get fall into something bad. Recently, for example, in the Nepal there was huge Glacier melt down and more that 2000 people died in that incident and it was unfortunate that suggest us to not to visit new places.

In conclusion, some people like to explore something new because of their risk taking attitude. While others try to avoid due to some risk involved associated with new things. I believe that we are living only one life and every one should explore something new as a life experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both attitudes and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat uneven. For instance, the argument regarding the 'glacier melt down' in Nepal as a reason to avoid travel is a bit tangential and not fully integrated into the broader discussion of familiarity versus novelty. While the position is clear, some points, such as the link between risk-taking and career success, could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one side,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though there are occasional instances where the flow could be smoother, such as the transition between the discussion of restaurant experiences and the broader point about financial loss. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You demonstrate the ability to use topic-specific language like 'risk takers,' 'creative,' and 'familiar.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'higher package' (should be 'higher salary' or 'remuneration') and 'get fall into something bad' (should be 'encounter difficulties'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in the Nepal'), subject-verb agreement ('this kind of people'), and preposition usage. Additionally, there are minor errors in sentence construction, such as 'that suggest us to not to visit.' While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy in basic grammar would significantly improve your score.
