IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people like to try new things, for example, places to visit and types of food. Other people prefer to keep doing things they are familiar with.
Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The world is very diverse and offers unending opportunities for us to try new things always, but not all the people like change. Some people are more comfortable with familiar things and prefer to repeat the same things as much as possible. Having habits and schedules is a good thing but being open to change and new opportunities is also an incredible quality.
One one hand, there are people who like to follow their usual routines and are not open to any kind of change. Such people prefer to keep doing the same things again and again. For example, have the same breakfast everyday, visiting the same temple/church always, going for dinner in the same restaurant repeatedly, and so on.
On the other hand, there are another group of people who love to try new things at every opportunity they get. Such people are more adventurous and like variety in life. They would like to try different types of food, and always visit a new restaurant. They enjoy experimenting with new types of clothes and try the available activities to keep their minds fresh.
In my opinion, one should follow a routine in order to feel at ease and peaceful. But once in a while, we should try new things as well. We should accept change as a part of life because the world is changing and so are we. Change is the law of nature and must be embraced with open arms.
In conclusion, following a basic schedule is good for us but minor changes here and there shouldn't matter so much. And trying new things might add those in our routines too so we should be open to all kids of change

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it discusses both attitudes toward change and provides a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide examples like eating breakfast or visiting a restaurant, these are quite simple and could be expanded to explain the underlying psychological reasons for these preferences. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis is more characteristic of a Band 6.0. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are more fully extended with deeper reasoning rather than just listing examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. You use basic cohesive devices like 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand' effectively. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the concluding paragraph is slightly abrupt. To improve, try to use a wider range of linking words and ensure that the transition between your personal opinion and the final summary is more seamless.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific vocabulary such as 'adventurous', 'variety', and 'experimenting'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is some repetition of basic words like 'things' and 'people'. There is also a minor error in the conclusion ('all kids of change' instead of 'all kinds of change'). To achieve a higher score, incorporate more precise synonyms and less common collocations to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'not all the people like change' (should be 'not all people') and 'there are another group of people' (should be 'there is another group'). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences could be more varied in structure. The majority of your sentences are error-free, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve accuracy.
