Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both attitudes towards trying new things versus sticking to familiar routines and providing a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas are generally relevant, such as gaining cultural knowledge through travel versus saving money by avoiding unfamiliar things. However, some ideas lack full development and depth. For instance, the argument regarding money and food waste is somewhat simplistic and repetitive. There is a tendency to over-generalise, such as stating that 'money can be utilised by buying gold' or that people throw away food if they do not like it. Despite these minor limitations in development and support, the prompt is fully answered throughout, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing each viewpoint and ending with a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'To commence with', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'On other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, phrases like 'To explain it more' and 'In sum up' are unnatural or ungrammatical. Paragraphing is used, but the transitions between sentences can be abrupt. There are also some missing punctuation marks that slightly disrupt the flow of reading. Overall, the organizational structure is discernible, matching the requirements for Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common items like 'contemporary era', 'predominant reason', and 'cultural knowledge'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'thier' instead of 'their', 'countries' instead of 'country's', 'pefer' instead of 'prefer', and 'ear' instead of 'era'. Furthermore, some collocations are awkward, such as 'people who are likely into travelling'. While these inaccuracies do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands where greater precision and stylistic awareness are required. The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, supporting a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors that recur throughout the essay. Examples include missing articles ('as travelling require much money'), subject-verb agreement errors ('living being have', 'every thing is expensive'), and run-on sentences ('This essay will articulate both opinions of this thought in forthcoming paragraphs, To commence with...'). Punctuation is also weak, particularly regarding commas and periods separating independent clauses. Although communication is rarely impeded entirely, the density and frequency of these grammatical slips place this performance firmly within the Band 5 descriptor, where frequent errors in grammar cause some difficulty for the reader.
