IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people like to try new things, for example, places to visit and types of food. Other people prefer to keep doing things they are familiar with.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people want to keep doing the same things, including visiting the same places and repeating meals whereas others love to explore different places and try food. I will discuss both aspects in the upcoming paragraphs along with my view.

The one big advantage of going to a new destination is the opportunity to meet citizens of different culture. This trend helps the world to come together as people make friedns at new places and communicate with them. Moreover, exploring different places will enhance the general knowledge of a person. By looking at the real monuments, building, sculptures, nature, wildlife of the place will be very beneficial and fascinating than watching it online.

Also, the same type of food everyday is very boring and unhealthy. Trying something new can actually excite the life. All the nutrients are not avilable in one kind of food. So, it is very essential to give a chance to various kinds of dishes.

However, on the contrary, preference to familiar places and food is very safe and convenient. A local person knows everything about the place, which makes it very easy to survive there. A language barrier at a different place will be very challenging too. Moreover, it saves a lot of money and time as well. Having information about the places which fall under the budget is very beenficial.

In conclusion, sticking to the small places and food is easy and less time-consuming but exploring the world is very essential to gain more knowledge of the place, people, food.

Transitional markers such as 'Moreover', 'Also', and 'However, on the contrary' are used to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and cohesive devices occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and the logical progression within paragraphs could be tightened for better flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, resulting in a solid Band 6.0 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'fascinating', 'convenient', and 'over-generalise' equivalents. There are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'friedns' for friends, 'avilable' for available, and 'beenficial' for beneficial, though these errors do not impede communication. The use of phrases like 'excite the life' is somewhat unnatural. These limitations place the vocabulary firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional ideas and subordinate clauses successfully. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including article omission ('eating the same type of food everyday') and prepositions ('at new places' instead of 'in new places'). Additionally, sentence fragments like 'By looking at the real monuments...' lack a main verb. While these errors are noticeable and occur with some frequency, they rarely impede overall communication, supporting a Band 6.0 score.
