IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people like to try new things, for example, places to visit and types of food. Other people prefer to keep doing things they are familiar with.
Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
People are categorised in two different categories whether they prefer trying new things or keep following same things. It is an indivdual's choice, however I believe people should try new things in their life as we are rewarded with only one life.
On the one hand, there are individuals who follow same pattern in their everyday life. The reason for this is, they do not have interest in living creative life or they are financially unstable to spend on expensive things. For example, people living in rural areas have no idea about city life and their income does not allow them to try new experiencs in their life. As a result, they do not get a chance to do something different other than their daily life activities.
On the other hand, people who like to try new things are more advanced and enjoy their life to the full. Food and travel vloggers, for instance explore new foods and different tourist destinations to experience different culture and tradition around the world. Furthurmore, they provide knowledge through social media handles to their followers. Consequently, it encourages youth to live life and take some time out of their busy schedules to explore new things.
In conclusion, less creative or low income families feel difficult to try different things, while individuals who step out from their comfort zone are more creative and ready to take bigger risks in their life. Different social media creators pass the message of following their dreams by choosing what individiuals like to do

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both attitudes and state a clear preference for trying new things, especially in the opening and conclusion. The examples of rural residents and travel or food vloggers are relevant, and you explain how social media may encourage others to explore. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the claim that people who stick to familiar routines lack interest in a creative life is broad, and the financial explanation could be explored more carefully. Your own opinion is clear but is not consistently supported with reasons beyond the idea that life is limited. Develop each attitude with a specific, balanced explanation and connect your examples more directly to why people choose it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two attitudes, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and examples generally appear in the relevant paragraph. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some stronger control through paragraphing. To make the flow more flexible and precise, avoid relying so heavily on formulaic transitions and clarify links between claims. For instance, the move from vloggers exploring new experiences to their influence on young people would benefit from a more explicit explanation of how that influence supports your argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “financially unstable,” “tourist destinations,” “different culture and tradition,” and “step out from their comfort zone.” These choices communicate the main ideas, but several word forms, spellings, and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “indivdual's,” “experiencs,” “Furthurmore,” and “following same pattern” are examples. Phrases such as “more advanced” are also unclear when describing people who try new things. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, explain that such people may be “more open-minded” rather than “more advanced.” This would make your vocabulary more controlled and appropriate to the discussion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrastive opening and clauses with “who,” “whether,” and “while.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the paragraph structure helps readers follow your meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, plurals, and sentence construction. For example, “keep following same things” needs an article or a more natural structure, while “different culture and tradition” requires plural forms in this context. The opening sentence, “People are categorised in two different categories whether…,” is awkwardly constructed, and the comma after “For example” is missing in the vloggers sentence. Review article and plural use, and revise sentences aloud to check that each clause connects naturally.
