Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to give some feedback over a book I recently bought from the library and had influenced me the most.

I have read your article looking for readers that got influenced by a book, I will be glad to show you my favourite book, it called 'Quand le jour doit a la nuit', it is a frensh romantic love story in Algeria during the war in 1940.

Moreover, it is very inspiring love story between two teenagers, and I am deeply moved by the book because it shows the value of emotions and feelings and the importance of trust between lovers!.

Additionally, I believe the book could inspire many people, because it contines the necessary morals that we missed in this generation, and the importance of respect amoung coupls.

Thank you for your attention regarding my opinion, I hope my view could be benefical for you!,

Yours faithfully,

Amanda Grace

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: describing the book, explaining its influence, and discussing its potential impact on others. The tone is appropriate for a magazine contribution. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the book shows the 'value of emotions', you could have provided a more specific example of a scene or character interaction to make your point more persuasive. The response is clear and the purpose of the letter is established immediately, but further elaboration on the 'morals' mentioned in the final paragraph would have strengthened the overall impact of your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'because' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally easy to follow, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is mostly clear, though the sentence structure in the second paragraph is slightly run-on, which affects the flow. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through your argument more smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'inspiring', 'beneficial', and 'morals'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'frensh' (French), 'contines' (contains), 'amoung' (among), and 'coupls' (couples). Additionally, there are minor collocation issues, such as 'give some feedback over a book' (should be 'about') and 'bought from the library' (libraries usually lend books, not sell them). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and attention to word choice to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'had influenced me' should be 'has influenced me', and 'it called' should be 'it is called'. There are also punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary comma after 'feelings' and the exclamation mark at the end of the letter, which is slightly informal for a letter to an editor. While your meaning is always clear, the frequency of these small errors suggests that you need to focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage.
