Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to provide a review for an article in your magazine and the article is named as 'The book that influenced me most'.

Firstly, the book which influenced me the most was 'The subtle art of not giving a fuck'. This book was about the life of a writer and its theme was 'motivation' to proceed life with, regardless of what the problems are in life. Moreover, it explained how the writter was able to tackle the hurdles of his life with motivation despite the lack of confidence in him at the start when he was in college and gradually he met various people and gained motivation to cope with obstacles.

I would like to inform you about my experience and the impact this book created on me. After reading the book, I was able to ovecome a few of issues onoing in my personal life with a greater motivation and a strong will power and finally I was successful ovecoming my personal problems. So this book totally changed me as it has influenced me deeply.

In my opinion, this books would substancially influence the people who need a motivation to proceed a life and who are facing troubles. This would be a great book for students as well as those having professional careers.

I am grateful to you for considering me for a review. Thanking you in anticipation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully identified the book, explained its personal impact, and provided a clear opinion on its potential influence on others. The tone is appropriate for a magazine contribution. However, the description of the book's content is slightly vague; for instance, stating it is about the 'life of a writer' is a bit inaccurate for this specific title, which focuses more on self-help and counter-intuitive philosophy. To improve, ensure your summary of the book's content is more precise and detailed to demonstrate a stronger grasp of the subject matter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'In my opinion' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is more fluid, perhaps by using more sophisticated referencing to connect your personal experience back to the book's themes.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'substantially', 'hurdles', and 'anticipation'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'writter' instead of 'writer', 'ovecome' instead of 'overcome', and 'substancially' instead of 'substantially'. Additionally, 'proceed a life' is an unnatural collocation. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To improve, focus on mastering the spelling of common words and learning more natural collocations to express your ideas with greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'the article is named as' (should be 'is titled'), 'this books would' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'Your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). While you attempt complex sentences, some contain minor errors that affect the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your closing salutations are standard. Increasing your control over complex structures will help you achieve a higher score.
