Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Editor,
I am writing to inform y
I am delighted to know that your magazine wants to know the most influencive book of the recent time, as this is rare
The book which has long lasting impact on my life is the "Trandences - My spiritual experiences with Pramukh Swami Maharaj, written by the former president of India, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam. He is the one of the great scientists and professors of India, and please call him the missile man of India due to his exceptional contribution in Indian space technology. In this book, Kalam Sir has beautifully described his thoughts to lead a meaningful life. With his intellectual experiences, he has brilliantly explain the importance of being spiritual and how it helped him to be a great scientist, leader and a good human being.
What stuck to me was his life incident he narrated in the second chapter of this book. He was rejected by the Indian Air Force authority in the fighter pilot test, and he was unable to digest this failure. He decided to give away his life and on his way he met a saint of who changes his perspective towards life. He wrote in his book, " I learnt on that day that whatever happens, happens for my good; and God has much bigger plans for me". Further he wrote, "When I become the President of India and all three army chiefs did salute to honor me, I experienced what I learnt on that day after meeting that Saint". This has taught me to be patient and accept the situation with positivity. It has also inspired me to be resilient and courageous.
I firmly believe that, this book can inspire other youth in the same way it has inspired me, and I would like you to include in your magazine.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Kind Regards,
Varsha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three parts of the prompt: describing the book, explaining its influence, and discussing its potential impact on others. Your ideas are well-developed, particularly the personal anecdote regarding the fighter pilot test, which provides a clear and engaging illustration of the book's influence. The tone is appropriate for a magazine contribution. To reach a higher band, ensure that the introduction is concise and free of fragmented or repetitive sentences, as the initial false start slightly detracts from the professional opening.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from the introduction of the book to a specific example of its impact, and finally to a concluding recommendation. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'What stuck to me was' and 'Further he wrote'. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor grammatical errors and slightly awkward phrasing in the opening. Improving the transition between the introductory sentences would enhance the overall cohesion of the piece.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'resilient', 'courageous', and 'exceptional contribution' appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'influencive' (influential) and 'explain' (explained), and some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'unable to digest this failure'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations. Expanding your use of more sophisticated, academic-style vocabulary would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'He is the one of the great scientists' (remove 'the'), 'brilliantly explain' (should be 'explained'), and 'a saint of who changes' (should be 'a saint who changed'). Punctuation is generally clear, but there are some minor errors with comma placement and verb tense consistency. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed without missing auxiliary verbs or incorrect relative pronouns.
