Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to express my views regarding the particular book which influenced me a lot towards the conservation of nature.

To begin with, the title of the book is ' The most precious gem of the Earth' which creates the awareness about the value of greenery and numerous methods to preserve it from various threats like deforestation and pollution.

The main idea which I like the most is it explains in a simple manner about the daily routine of the people and their health issues which can be fixed by follow some precautions with some natural ingredients and afforestation in our surroundings.

In my opinion, this reference would be helpful to think not only about the significance of the forests on the earth but also to live healthy lifestyle in the lap of the nature.

Kindly, take my reference book onto your consideration and publish in your magazine.

Thank You

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the book, explain its influence on your perspective regarding nature, and suggest its potential impact on others. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples of how the book changed your daily habits or offer a more detailed explanation of why it would influence others. The content is relevant, but the depth of the discussion is limited, which keeps the response at a solid, functional level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the introduction to the book's content, its influence, and finally a concluding recommendation. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with' and 'In my opinion' to link your ideas. However, the transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated. Some sentences feel slightly disconnected, and the overall flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better referencing to connect your thoughts more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'conservation', 'afforestation', and 'significance'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'take my reference book onto your consideration' (should be 'take my recommendation into consideration') and 'follow some precautions' (should be 'following some precautions'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations and idiomatic expressions would help elevate your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'which creates the awareness' should be 'which creates awareness', and 'fixed by follow some precautions' should be 'fixed by following some precautions'. Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of gerunds and prepositions after passive constructions.
