Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to provide you with the information related to the book that influenced me most. I recently read Living The Good Life written by David Evans who owns numerous fitness clubs in Canada.

This book is particularly about the physical and mental wellness of a middle class individual who faced several difficult situations throughout his journey to success. As an author, David has mentioned his personal life story in this book to let people know that money is not everything they need. It is fitness that they need to earn money and stay happy.

I am surprised that after reading this book i could find courage to step outside and I have started going for a walk for 40 minutes and noticed that my mental stress has reduced to a limit that I can manage. Nowadays, I am keeping an optimistic approach as the whole book is full with experiences that every individual face.

I believe, other people without any age limit can read this book and make their mind to chose fitness. Especially who are keen to make muscles must read page 16 where David states his story of an accident. I assure you that people would definitely get into this and fitness clubs will soon be filled with more members.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Please let me know if you would like to have a copy of this book.

Yours sincerely,

Rajwinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly describe the book's content, explain its personal impact, and provide a logical argument for why it would influence others. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the personal reflection on how the book encouraged you to exercise. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the book's content is slightly more nuanced, as the current description is a bit general. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear and consistent position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Nowadays' and 'Especially', to link ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to improve the flow. Additionally, some of the referencing, such as 'the whole book is full with experiences that every individual face', could be more tightly connected to the previous sentence. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'optimistic approach' and 'mental stress' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'full with experiences' (should be 'full of') and 'make their mind to chose fitness' (should be 'make up their mind to choose'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Incorporating more precise academic or formal vocabulary would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several error-free sentences, but some grammatical slips persist, such as 'every individual face' (should be 'faces') and 'Especially who are keen' (should be 'Especially those who are keen'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though the use of 'i' instead of 'I' is a recurring error that should be avoided. Despite these minor issues, your control of grammar is generally good, and the meaning is always clear to the reader.
