Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I got to know that you are looking to include contribution from your readers for one of your article. I also wanted to share my experience with you about one book that I read last year and got influenced.

The book was an autobiography of famous cricketer Mr.Sachin Tendulkar who is also known as "GOD OF CRICKET". I got really inspired after reading this book as this book has detailed chapters on various incidents of the life of Mr.Sachin. The main reason I got amazed by this book is never give up attitude of Mr.Sachin in every stage of life. Through the life the way this man has deal with each problem and how he overcome his limitation via strong commitment and positivity.

I really think that this book will inspire millions of people in future to pursue their dream and follow their passion. It will give strong message to readers that "Don't stop until you achieve what you want".

Thanks,

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task. You described the book, explained its influence on your 'never give up' attitude, and provided a clear opinion on its potential to influence others. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the book has 'detailed chapters', you could have provided a more specific example of an incident from the book to make your response more engaging. Additionally, the tone is slightly informal for a letter to an editor. To reach a higher band, ensure your explanations are more fully extended with specific details rather than general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use basic cohesive devices like 'The main reason' and 'Through the life', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural. The referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the description of the book and its influence on you could be better linked to create a more cohesive narrative. Overall, the structure is sufficient for the task, but more varied linking words would improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, such as 'autobiography', 'inspired', and 'commitment'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'got to know' instead of 'learned' or 'was informed', and 'via strong commitment' which is slightly awkward in this context. You also use 'got influenced' and 'got amazed', which are repetitive and informal. To improve, try to use more precise verbs and avoid overusing 'got'. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated collocations would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For instance, 'I got to know that you are looking to include contribution' should be 'contributions', and 'the way this man has deal with each problem' should be 'dealt'. There are also issues with articles ('the life of Mr.Sachin') and sentence fragments like 'Through the life the way this man has deal with each problem...'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the clarity of your writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb tenses will significantly improve your accuracy.
