Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to contribute to your magazine article. The book that influenced me most is The little prince by John.

The book is about a young prince who travel one planet to another planet and meet different people. During his journey, he learns important lessons of kindness, love, relationships. This book is very simple but it can taught very meaningful lessons.

This book influenced me because it taught me how to value people and relationship over than material thing. It also made me understand that we should be kind to others and appreciate those who are important to us. After reading this book, I started thinking more positively about my relationships with my family and friends.

I believe this book will influence others people, especially to the young generation. This book is very simple to understand and give very meaningful lessons. Which we use in our daily life, many people take it in different ways to understand, but i think readers will be understand something valuable from it.

I hope you will considered my contributions into your magazine article.

Yours faithfully,

Dhruv Kumar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the book, explaining its influence, and discussing its potential impact on others. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention the book teaches 'kindness' and 'love', you could have provided a more specific example from the plot to better illustrate these themes. Additionally, you incorrectly attribute the authorship of 'The Little Prince' to 'John' (it was written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry). While this is a factual error, the primary issue is that the ideas remain at a surface level rather than being fully extended.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing, which helps the reader follow your argument. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. You rely on simple transitions like 'This book' or 'It also'. To achieve a higher band, you should incorporate a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') to improve the flow between sentences and ideas. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be more sophisticated to create a smoother narrative.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You frequently use simple adjectives like 'simple', 'meaningful', and 'important'. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'relationship over than material thing' (should be 'relationships over material things') and 'readers will be understand' (should be 'readers will understand'). To improve, try to use more descriptive language and ensure correct word forms. You have a sufficient range to communicate your message, but the lack of less common vocabulary or idiomatic expressions keeps this in the mid-range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'who travel one planet to another' (should be 'who travels from one planet to another'), 'it can taught' (should be 'it can teach'), and 'I hope you will considered' (should be 'I hope you will consider'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they indicate a lack of control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement. Increasing your accuracy in these areas will significantly improve your score.
