Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to the article published in your magazine looking for the contributions from the readers for "The book that influenced me most".

I want to recommend a book, which I read in my childhood. The book name is "Lovable", which is written in the native language Malayalam. It is all about a person who uses his talents to build his own business empire. He was born to a middle class parents, and with his hard work he overcomes all the obstacles.

Since I started to read this book, it influenced me in several ways. It taught me to see dreams and goals. Also, whenever I have difficult times, I will remember the quoting from this book, which will give me the courage to face that challenges.

This book can influence other people, especially youths because it gives logical ideas to become a successful person. Moreover, this is written in a way that people in any age can relate with their life. This will help them to set their goals or face the problems.

Thank you for the consideration.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Jeya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You described the book 'Lovable', explained its influence on your goal-setting and courage, and provided a clear opinion on why it would influence others. The tone is appropriate for a magazine contribution. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific detail about the book's narrative or a particular scene that resonated with you, rather than keeping the description somewhat general. This would help to fully develop your ideas and make the letter more engaging for the magazine's readers.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Since I started to read', though the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'obstacles', 'business empire', and 'consideration'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the quoting from this book' (should be 'quotes' or 'quotations') and 'middle class parents' (should be 'middle-class parents'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient for the task but lacks the sophistication or flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'looking for the contributions' (unnecessary article), 'The book name is' (should be 'The name of the book is'), and 'people in any age' (should be 'people of any age'). Additionally, there are minor issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for small articles and prepositions would be beneficial.
