Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am delighted to be invited to offer my review for a great article called 'The book that influenced me most' published in your magazine.
I should admit that the article is really informative guiding me to the book that influenced me the most, the book I choose was a about the different cultures across Canada that integrate in the community to provide a fruitfull neighbourhood.
The book relates directly to the community I currently live, where Indigenous communities share their thoughts and experiences that they pass along to their generations. The elders emphasize that traditions should be honoured and respected while generations grow.
While different communites and cultures have their own perspective view, most communities agree with Indigenous cultures that embrace the ancient cultures that their ancestrals followed. Some communities hesitate adopting or learning since they have never been exposed to the ancent community.
Having said that, I believe my thoughts would be highly appreciated by your readers and I expect a positive feedback from your editorial team.
Your's Sincerely,
John Write.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt, which is a positive start. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the book is about Canadian cultures and Indigenous traditions, the description remains vague. You explain how it influenced you by mentioning the importance of honouring traditions, but this could be expanded with a specific example of a change in your own perspective. Furthermore, you do not clearly answer the final part of the prompt regarding whether it would influence others; you only state that you believe your thoughts would be appreciated by readers. To improve, ensure each bullet point is fully explored with concrete details.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'While' and 'Having said that', to link ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. The connection between the book's content and the general discussion of cultural perspectives could be smoother. Additionally, some sentences feel a bit disjointed, such as the second paragraph's focus on elders. Improving the use of cohesive devices to show clearer relationships between your personal experience and the broader societal impact would enhance the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, including terms like 'informative', 'integrate', and 'honoured'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'fruitfull neighbourhood' (should be 'fruitful'), 'perspective view' (redundant), and 'ancent' (spelling error). The phrase 'the book I choose was a about' contains a grammatical slip that also affects lexical accuracy. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your spelling is accurate. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated descriptors for the influence the book had on you would also be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally hinder clarity. For example, 'the book I choose was a about' is grammatically incorrect, and 'the community I currently live' is missing a preposition ('in'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'most communities agree with Indigenous cultures that embrace the ancient cultures that their ancestrals followed' (should be 'ancestors'). To improve, pay closer attention to sentence construction, particularly the use of prepositions and relative clauses, and proofread for basic grammatical slips.
