Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Editor,
I am writing to share my thoughts about the book that has influenced me the most, Atomic Habits by James Clear. It is a self-development book that explains how small changes in our daily habits can lead to significant improvements over time.
The book mainly focuses on building good habits and getting rid of bad ones. The author explains that people often focus too much on achieving big goals instead of improving their daily routines. He provides practical strategies, such as making good habits easy and attractive while making bad habits difficult to follow.
This book influenced me because it changed the way I approach my studies and personal goals. Instead of expecting immediate results, I started focusing on small but consistent improvements. For example, studying for a short period every day became more effective for me than studying for several hours just before an exam.
I believe this book can influence many other people, especially students and working professionals. Its advice is practical and can easily be applied to everyday life.
Yours faithfully,
Gurcharan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly describe the book's content, explain its personal influence, and provide a logical justification for why it would influence others. The tone is appropriate for a magazine contribution, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant. You have maintained a consistent focus throughout the letter, ensuring that all parts of the task are covered effectively. The structure is logical, and the content is sufficiently extended to meet the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the text easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'Instead of', and 'especially' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is logical and appropriate for a formal letter. The transition between the description of the book and its personal impact is smooth, and the overall structure supports the development of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context. Phrases like 'self-development book', 'significant improvements', 'practical strategies', and 'consistent improvements' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated or less common collocations to reach a higher band. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely, and there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The writing is highly accurate with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use relative clauses ('that has influenced me', 'that explains how') and conditional-like structures effectively. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and verb tenses is strong. There are no significant grammatical errors, and the flow of the text is natural. The grammatical range is sufficient to express your ideas clearly and professionally.
