Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to tell you about that the book that i have read that had a huge influence on me .
The name of the book is "The diary of a young girl" and it is written by Anne frank. This book as the name described is a diary of a teenage girl in which she writes whatever is happening in her everyday life. The author is a jew who is living in Germany during the world war 2. The book showcases the challenges and discriminations the Jewish people faced during that time
The reason why this book has such a strong influence on me is because when I red that book I was also a teenage. Therefore, I could relate to Anne, her feeling, her struggles as a teenage girl.
I believe that this book can influence other people as well , as the book is a autobiography and is well written. I hope my suggestion is helpful and you will include it. Looking for your prompt response.
Kind Regards
Avneet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the book, explaining its influence, and discussing its potential impact on others. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, when explaining the influence, you mention you could relate to Anne's struggles, but you do not elaborate on how this changed your perspective or actions. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or deeper reflection on the 'influence' aspect to fully develop your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Therefore' and 'The reason why'. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the jump from describing the book to explaining its influence could be smoother with better linking phrases. Additionally, ensure that your paragraphing is consistent; currently, the structure is clear, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by varying your linking words rather than relying on simple structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly, such as 'discriminations', 'autobiography', and 'challenges'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'red' instead of 'read' and 'a autobiography' instead of 'an autobiography'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and ensure correct collocations. Your control over basic vocabulary is adequate, but you need to demonstrate a wider range of less common lexical items to improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'tell you about that the book that i have read', 'a teenage' instead of 'a teenager', and 'the world war 2' instead of 'World War II'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. While your meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from being considered error-free. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
