Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to you about one of the books that influenced me a lot, which is none other than 'The Migration'.

Actually, this book is not only a story type, but it also provides great knowledge about bird migration. In this book, the author describes, why birds and animals need to move from there original place, and how they learn the pattern of migration.

Honestly, previously I did not have enough knowledge about the migration pattern, this book help me a lot to learn number of thing about wild life. Furthermore, it also describes some of the main difficulties that they have survived due to the sudden weather change, and scarcity of food.

I believe that, this book motivate the readers alot. As the sense of book seems to be very motivated. It is also good for children as it included number of animated picture. Moreover, the price of this book is very affordable.

Looking forward for your response.

Yours faithfully,

Gurleen Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the book, explaining its influence, and discussing its potential impact on others. The tone is appropriate for a magazine contribution. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how the book influenced you is quite brief, focusing on 'learning about wildlife' rather than a deeper personal impact. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your personal reflections and provide more specific details about the book's content to fully engage the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Actually' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. Some transitions feel slightly abrupt, and the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'the sense of book seems to be very motivated'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'scarcity', 'migration pattern', and 'affordable'. However, there are several instances of word choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'story type' instead of 'narrative' or 'fictional/non-fictional', and 'motivated' used incorrectly as an adjective to describe the book's effect on readers. Additionally, there are minor errors in word formation, such as 'number of thing' instead of 'number of things'. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'there original place' (should be 'their'), 'this book help me' (should be 'helped'), and 'it included number of animated picture' (should be 'it includes a number of animated pictures'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in comma usage, such as 'I believe that, this book...'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage.
