Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my interest in the magazine that will consist of an article called ' The book that influenced me most'. The one book that had a great impact on me was ' The mountain is you'.
The author of this book is Brianna West who wrote this book showing how human mind and thoughts influence the course of events. The book explains how self sabotage and inner conflicts can change a person's perspective about themself.
The author tried to showcase how one can achieve anything if they are determined about it. The book greatly helped me to reset my mindset and in ways of mastering my own identity. Additionally, I reflected upon myself and focused on my goals that i want to acheive without any procastination after reading this book.
l would suggest this book to someone who is struggling with deep inner conflicts and wants to change the way they think. It will help them in their transformation from being an obstacle for themselves to standing up for yourself.
I am looking forward to your positive response.
Yours Sincerely,
Ava

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student successfully covers all parts of the task prompt. The letter begins appropriately and clearly identifies the purpose of writing. The first bullet point is addressed by describing the book 'The mountain is you' and explaining how human thoughts and self-sabotage influence events. The second bullet point is well covered by explaining the personal impact, noting how it helped reset the student's mindset and overcome procrastination. Finally, the third bullet point is met by suggesting the book to individuals struggling with inner conflicts. The tone is appropriate for a magazine submission, and ideas are relevant and sufficiently extended throughout the response, earning a solid band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organised and flows well from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the description of the book, its personal impact, and recommendations for other readers. Cohesive devices are used effectively, with phrases like 'The author of this book', 'Additionally', and 'l would suggest this book' guiding the reader through the text smoothly. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional minor slip-ups in paragraph transitions exist, they do not hinder overall readability. The letter format is respected with appropriate opening and closing salutations, ensuring a coherent and well-structured piece of writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited for the task. Words and phrases such as 'express my interest', 'great impact', 'self sabotage', 'inner conflicts', and 'transformation' show a fair ability to use less common lexical items. However, there are a few noticeable spelling errors, such as 'themself' instead of 'themselves', 'acheive' instead of 'achieve', and 'procastination' instead of 'procrastination'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The book explains how self sabotage and inner conflicts can change a person's perspective' and 'The author tried to showcase how one can achieve anything if they are determined about it.' Grammatical control is generally quite good, though there are a few minor errors, such as missing articles ('how human mind' instead of 'how the human mind') and a capitalization slip ('i want to acheive'). Punctuation is mostly accurate, and complex structures are attempted with a fair degree of success, allowing the majority of sentences to communicate meaning without difficulty.
