Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to give you feedback on your article 'The book that influenced me most'.

Regarding the article, first of all, I like the heading of this section, then I started to read it about a month ago.It is about 7 habits of life, it explains well with how to start your day to finish in a productive way.

This article has influenced me significantly. I have started to follow morning routine, daily exercises for 20 minutes, eating healthy foods, and reading 10 minutes before go to bed. After following this routine not only my sleep quality improves but also my mood and behaviour changed alot.

I definitely agree that this article will motivate other readers as well if they want to change their habits of life. I recommended this paragraph to read to my friends and some relatives too, they also liked it.

I hope this feedback is helpful for you. I look forward to reading your more articles.

Yours faithfully,

Prgnya Pandya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt, though the student slightly confuses the task by treating the magazine's call for contributions as an 'article' rather than a 'book'. The book is described as being about '7 habits of life' and productivity. The personal influence is clearly detailed, mentioning changes in morning routines, exercises, and sleep quality. Finally, the likelihood of influencing others is addressed through the student's mention of recommending it to friends and relatives. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive in places, particularly when discussing the recommendation. Overall, the content addresses the prompt adequately but lacks the deeper extension of ideas expected at higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression from introduction to description, personal impact, and recommendations, adopting an appropriate formal greeting and sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points, such as the book's contents and its effects. However, cohesive devices are at times mechanical or somewhat awkward, such as 'Regarding the article, first of all, I like the heading of this section, then I started to read it...'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly regarding whether the student is reviewing the magazine article or the book itself. Nevertheless, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating some attempts at less common lexical items such as 'significantly', 'productive way', and 'sleep quality'. However, there are notable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'habits of life' instead of 'habits of highly effective people' or simply 'daily habits', and 'reading 10 minutes before go to bed' where the prepositional phrase is awkward. Furthermore, vocabulary is occasionally repetitive, and some phrasing sounds unnatural or translated directly. The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but inaccuracies prevent it from achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional or relative clauses ('if they want to change their habits of life'). There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including run-on sentences and comma splices, as seen in 'It is about 7 habits of life, it explains well with how to start your day...'. Other errors include missing articles ('before go to bed' instead of 'before going to bed') and slight preposition misuse ('explained well with how'). Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear and does not seriously impede communication.
