Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response responds to the task only minimally, and the length requirement is not met as the essay contains 144 words, falling short of the 150-word minimum (with 17 words copied directly from the prompt discounted). While all three bullet points from the prompt are touched upon in a rudimentary way—such as mentioning new technology, stating how it influenced the writer, and predicting it would influence youth—the ideas are extremely limited and under-developed. For instance, the description of the book is vague, merely stating it relates to 'new technology' and 'APPLE PHONE and Laptop', without providing meaningful details. To move up, the writer must fully develop all parts of the prompt with extended, relevant ideas and meet the required word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
Information and ideas are not arranged in a coherent way, lacking clear overall progression. The response is written as a single, dense block of text without proper paragraphing to separate the distinct points required by the task. Furthermore, cohesive devices are faulty, mechanical, or lacking entirely, leading to abrupt transitions between sentences. Phrases like 'Thats why' and 'As i am saying' demonstrate a lack of control over logical relationships and referencing. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer needs to organise the letter into logical paragraphs (such as separate paragraphs for introduction, book description, influence, and recommendation) and use a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, employing a limited range that strains the reader's comprehension at times. There are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'informative used', 'acess', 'pity sure', and 'working with house hold ladies'. These errors reflect an inadequate range for more precise expression. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are unsuccessful due to these inaccuracies. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, learn correct collocations, ensure accurate word forms, and pay closer attention to spelling and precise vocabulary choices suited to a semi-formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on simple sentence forms with frequent errors that impede communication. There are persistent mistakes in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as 'I am writing this letter the editor', 'This book which i have seen', 'in this book have many informative used', and 'guide us the acess'. Attempts at complex structures are faulty and lead to frequent inaccuracies that distort meaning in places. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of sentence structures while significantly improving control over basic grammatical rules, punctuation, and syntactical accuracy.
