Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

The purpose for my writing is to give my feedback on a book called 'The power of positive thinking' which I have completed reading a week ago. My name is Himanshi Patel and I bought this book one month ago.

This book has around 10 units and each unit describes the way people need to think in various situations. In addition, there are some examples provided with it which provides a clear vision for deal with different conditions.

This book influenced me a lot in my real life. As after reading it I also change my way of thinking. I always try to think positive while dealing with difficult circumstances which provides better outcome and enhanced my confidence.

I think this book is a great for the people who take so much stress and unable to think positive in various situation. This book definitely help them to overcome from negative thinking to positive thinking.

Thank you so much for this great master piece and looking forward to read another book of yours.

Yours faithfully,

Himanshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you identify The Power of Positive Thinking, describe its units and examples, explain that it changed how you respond to difficult circumstances, and say it could help people who experience stress. The personal effect is clear, especially in “I always try to think positive,” but the book’s content remains quite general; one specific idea or example from a chapter would make the description more informative. Your prediction about its effect on others is relevant, though it would be stronger with a brief explanation of why its advice would suit those readers. The letter has an appropriate purpose and closing, but “Dear Sir” does not follow the requested opening exactly, and the final thanks to the author is slightly unclear in a letter to a magazine editor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a sensible sequence: introduction, description of the book, personal influence, likely influence on others, and closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “In addition” and “As after reading it” show an effort to connect ideas. Some connections are mechanical or unclear, however. The sentence beginning “As after reading it” is not smoothly attached to the previous point, and “which provides” in the description could refer either to the examples or the units. The final paragraph also shifts from discussing the book’s likely effect to thanking the editor or author. Clearer references and more natural transitions would make the progression more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic and personal response, including “difficult circumstances,” “confidence,” and “overcome.” There are also attempts at more descriptive phrasing, such as “clear vision,” although this is not the most natural collocation in context. Several noticeable word-choice and form errors limit precision: “completed reading” would be more naturally expressed as “finished reading,” “a great master piece” is awkward and incorrectly spaced, and “think positive” should be “think positively” or “think in a positive way.” Repetition of “positive thinking” and “book” also narrows the range. Aim for accurate collocations and vary references, for example with “the book” or “its advice.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, and the main message remains understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “I also change my way of thinking” needs a past form (“changed”), while “which provides” does not agree clearly with its plural reference, “examples.” “This book is a great” needs a noun after the article, and “This book definitely help them” requires “helps.” The opening description also contains an awkwardly constructed sentence beginning “As after reading it.” These issues show that more complex forms are being attempted, but they are not yet consistently controlled. Practise checking tense consistency, subject–verb agreement, and complete sentence structure.
