Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regarding an advertisement I have read recently in your magazine, which was inviting your readers to contribute with the most influenced book they have read.
I would like to talk about a great book I have read recently called "Best ways to raise our sons". This book was talking about raising boys, and how to deal with them throughout their life stages, especially their teens.
This book was such great help to me as a single mother. I can not deny how helpful it was for me to know various detials about this stage of my son's life, and how to deal with his horomonus' changes. Moreover, how to help him to learn how to take his own decisions and take the responsibility of its consequences.
From my point of view, this book is a must for every parent, to ease this time for both parents and teenagers in terms of understanding the physical and mental changes that every boy goes through.
Thank you for your consideration, I really look forward to hearing from you soon
Yours faithfully
Diana

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three points: you identify the book and its subject, explain its value to you as a single mother, and recommend it to other parents. The personal detail about learning how to support your son through adolescence makes the influence clear. The final point is relevant, but it is developed less fully: you say the book is a “must for every parent” and mention understanding boys’ changes, without explaining why its advice might also affect readers beyond parents or giving a specific example of its wider impact. The purpose and tone are appropriate for a letter to an editor. To strengthen the response, extend the recommendation with a concrete reason or example of how another reader could benefit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information follows a sensible sequence: you introduce the reason for writing, describe the book, explain its personal effect, and finish with a recommendation and sign-off. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “From my point of view” make relationships between ideas clear. Some connections are less smooth, however. “Moreover, how to help him…” is a sentence fragment rather than a complete continuation, and the final recommendation repeats the idea of the book being helpful without adding much progression. The closing also runs into the sign-off without clear punctuation. For a stronger, more consistently controlled flow, connect related points in complete sentences and make each paragraph add a distinct detail.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “single mother,” “life stages,” “physical and mental changes,” and “responsibility.” These choices communicate the subject and personal relevance of the book. However, the range is somewhat limited, and several word-choice or spelling problems reduce precision: “contribute with” is an awkward collocation, “the most influenced book” does not express the intended meaning naturally, and “detials” and “horomonus” are misspelled. “This book was talking about” is also imprecise for describing a book’s content. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; more precise phrases would make the letter sound clearer and more polished without changing its accessible tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, such as the opening sentence with a relative clause and the explanation of how the book helped you. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. “Moreover, how to help him…” is an incomplete sentence, while “the responsibility of its consequences” has unclear pronoun reference and an awkward grammatical relationship. In “I can not deny how helpful it was for me to know…,” the construction is understandable but not well controlled. The closing sentence also joins two independent ideas with only a comma. Work on complete sentence formation, clear pronoun reference, and punctuation between clauses; these improvements would make your varied structures more consistently accurate.
