Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or madam,

I am glad that you consider the public opinion on the books they have read. I would like to contribute to the survey about a book called The space time theory by Neil Degrass Tyson. I have recentley read this book, as i have keen interest in astro-physics.

this book perticularly answers on the basis of scientific facts and rationally if there is life existing in Outer space, which i found really impressive.

this book influence me in different way because it fulfilled by curiousity about space exploration. i got the answers for my question, which i had in my mind from a long time.

I think this book is mainly for the people, who are interested to know about the outer space and space technology. so, i suggest people who are not interesteed in astro physics should not read this book.

i hope you will consider my review in the article 'The book that influenced me the most'

your faithfully,

Gurdial Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you identify the book and its subject, explain that it answered questions you had about space, and give a view about who might benefit from reading it. The personal reason for choosing it—your interest in astrophysics—also makes the letter relevant. However, the explanation of its influence is brief, and the final recommendation is quite restrictive: saying people who are not interested in astrophysics “should not read this book” does not fully explore whether its ideas could influence a wider audience. Develop one specific change in your thinking or behaviour and explain why the book might appeal to readers beyond specialists. The purpose and overall position are clear, though some ideas are less fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a sensible overall order: you introduce your contribution, describe the book, explain its effect on you, and finish with a recommendation and closing. This makes the main message easy to follow. Some links between ideas are basic or unclear, however. For example, “this book influence me in different way because” introduces the effect but does not clearly connect the book’s discussion of life in space to the answers you gained. The text would be easier to navigate if you separated the book description, personal influence, and recommendation into clear paragraphs. Use linking phrases selectively to show cause and contrast, rather than relying mainly on “this book” and “so.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “scientific facts,” “space exploration,” and “outer space,” so the reader can understand the subject and your interest in it. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “astro-physics” and “space technology.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “recentley,” “curiousity,” and “interesteed.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “answers on the basis of scientific facts” and “fulfilled by curiousity.” These choices reduce precision, even though the overall meaning remains understandable. Aim to learn accurate topic-related spelling and use natural collocations, for example, “explores the possibility of life beyond Earth” and “satisfied my curiosity.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You communicate the main ideas using a mix of simple sentences and some longer structures, including “I have recently read this book, as I have a keen interest…” and “I got the answers for my question, which I had in my mind…”. The message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “this book influence me” needs a past-tense verb, and “answers for my question” has an incorrect grammatical pattern. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, particularly at the beginnings of sentences and in the closing. To improve, check verb tense and agreement, use complete sentence boundaries, and practise combining clauses accurately while retaining the variety you already attempt.
