Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is undeniable that people spend most of their lives near to where they were born. In this essay, I will explain the reasons behind it and, the advantages and disadvantages associated with living close to a homeland.

To begin with, there are a plethora of reasons why people prefer to live close to where they were born. The first and foremost reason is that people are more comfortable and familiar with the place. In other words, people are raised and made friends within that place which makes their comfort zone. Moreover, individuals who have spent entire childhood at their birthplace, have knowledge about everything nearby and connected to little things. Hence, people are attached to their home and do not want to move from their comfortable zone.

There some benefits associated with living close to motherland. Firstly, people know about everything at everywhere and they feel connected. In addition, neighborhood are very close to them so, if they is any trouble, neighbors can come to help. For example, if there is any medical emergency, people from around can come to help. People have good friendship because these friends are from the childhood. Therefore, these are possible advantages of living nearby homeland.

However, living close to where they born and raised up brings some drawbacks as well. The main disadvantage is that people will remain in the same area throughout their whole life. They do not get to experience a different lifestyle if they do not move. Secondly, sometimes people can not have a great career if they prefer to live near and do not move to urban area.

To conclude, few people spend most of their lives nearby the area where they born because of its comfortability and good community around.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: reasons, advantages, and disadvantages are all covered. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why people stay is repetitive, focusing mainly on 'comfort zone'. The advantages and disadvantages are mentioned but lack depth; the point about career opportunities is a good start but could have been expanded with a specific example. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more detailed explanations and concrete examples for each point raised, ensuring that the arguments are fully extended rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'Firstly', and 'However' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as in the sentence 'people know about everything at everywhere', which is slightly awkward and impacts the smooth progression of ideas. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences connect more naturally would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. You use some good phrases like 'plethora of reasons' and 'comfort zone'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'connected to little things', 'know about everything at everywhere', and 'comfortability' (which is less common than 'comfort'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Expanding your range to include more topic-specific vocabulary related to migration or social dynamics would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' before 'motherland'), subject-verb agreement ('if they is any trouble'), and sentence construction ('if they prefer to live near and do not move to urban area'). These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and attempt to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater precision.
