Student answer (Band 8.5)

Some people choose to spend their entire lives in the area where they were born, while others move to different cities or countries in search of new opportunities. There are several reasons why many individuals prefer to remain close to their birthplace. Although this decision offers a number of benefits, it also has certain drawbacks.

One of the main reasons people stay in their hometown is their strong emotional attachment to family and friends. Living close to loved ones provides emotional support and allows people to maintain close relationships. Another reason is familiarity. People know the local culture, language, and way of life, making them feel comfortable and secure. In addition, some individuals have stable jobs or family businesses in their hometown and see little reason to relocate.

There are several advantages to living near one's birthplace. Firstly, people can easily receive support from their families during difficult times, such as illness or financial hardship. Secondly, the cost of living is often lower in smaller towns than in large cities, allowing people to enjoy a better quality of life. For example, many people in rural areas own their homes and spend less money on daily expenses than those living in major cities.

However, there are also some disadvantages. Staying in the same place for a lifetime may limit career opportunities, especially if the local job market is small. People may also miss the chance to experience different cultures, meet new people, and develop new skills. As a result, they might become less adaptable and less competitive in today's global job market.

In conclusion, people often remain close to where they were born because of family ties, familiarity, and stable employment. While this choice provides emotional security and financial benefits, it may also restrict personal growth and career development. Therefore, individuals should carefully consider both the advantages and disadvantages before deciding where to live.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly identified the reasons for staying in one's birthplace (emotional attachment, familiarity, stability) and provided a balanced discussion of both the advantages (support systems, cost of living) and disadvantages (limited career growth, lack of cultural exposure). The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of rural home ownership and the impact on the global job market. The position is clear throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points discussed in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'One of the main reasons,' 'In addition,' 'Firstly,' and 'However,' which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the response. The referencing is precise, and the flow of information is natural, making the essay easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'emotional attachment,' 'financial hardship,' and 'global job market' are used appropriately. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it remains largely functional. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations to add nuance to your arguments. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task, and there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The essay displays a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the conditional structure in the final paragraph and the use of participial phrases like 'making them feel comfortable.' The punctuation is accurate, and the sentence construction is generally error-free. The majority of your sentences are clear and well-formed. There are no significant grammatical errors that distract the reader, and your control over complex structures is consistent throughout the text.
