Student answer (Band 7.0)

While some people love to experience various places and often change the cities in which they live, others enjoy to settle down in the same city where they born or lived their childhood. There are various reasons why individuals prefer to spend their life in the same city.

To begin with, many people are blessed to have abandon inherent wealth and money which allows them to live in the same city or area in which they were born, instead wandering at different places to find employment opportunities. At the same time, some people prioritize simplicity and convenience over luxury and status, which they found in living in the same city where they have done their schooling and have created childhood memories and friends. Familiarity and community bonding are another reasons why people spent most of their lives in one city. By living in the same city for a longer period, people know the surrounding areas, weather and climate conditions, and community very well , as a result they develop meaningful relations in life which is the base of happiness.

There are many positive aspects of this. Individuals develop meaningful relations and sense of belonging, which helps elderly people to enjoy their retirement life without being alone and feeling lonely. Furthermore, people who are surrounded by friends, experience less stress and able to maintain healthy and active lifestyle.

On the other hand, there are many negative sides of living in the same area for most of the lives. Individual do not gain diverse experience and knowledge, which might adversely impact their professional life and they stuck at the same level in their jobs. They often restrain to experience the great culture and custom of various places, not allowing them to broaden their perspective and thinking towards life, which is essential to live meaningful life. Additionally, they are not able to adapt changes quickly and hesitant to develop relationship with people from different backgrounds, making them people with reserved and introvert personality.

To conclude, although there are many advantages of living in the birth place, such as convenience, comforts and strong community tie ups, people might miss to experience the rich culture of various places and unable to broaden their thinking horizon, leading to narrow mentality and reserved nature, which may restrict their growth as human being.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: reasons for staying in one's birthplace, as well as the advantages and disadvantages. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the discussion on community bonding and the professional limitations of staying in one place. However, some points could be further extended with more specific examples to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, and the structure follows a logical progression that covers the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is a bit repetitive. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication of ideas. There are attempts to use less common items like 'inherent wealth' and 'broaden their perspective'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'abandon inherent wealth' (likely meant 'abundant') and 'restrain to experience' (should be 'refrain from experiencing'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the writing. A wider range of sophisticated vocabulary would be needed for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('people spent most of their lives', 'they stuck at the same level') and missing articles or incorrect prepositions. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma placement. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching the 7.0 band for grammar.
