Student answer (Band 8.0)
Some people choose to spend their entire lives in the same area where they were born, while others prefer to move to different cities or countries. This essay will discuss the reasons why many people remain close to their birthplace and examine the advantages and disadvantages of this decision.
One of the main reasons people stay in their hometown is their strong attachment to family and friends. Living nearby allows them to receive emotional support, maintain close relationships, and take care of elderly parents. Another reason is familiarity with the local culture, language, and lifestyle, which provides a sense of security and comfort. In addition, some people have stable jobs or successful family businesses in their hometown, making relocation unnecessary.
There are several advantages to living close to one's birthplace. Firstly, people can maintain strong family bonds and receive help whenever needed. This is particularly beneficial when raising children or dealing with personal difficulties. Secondly, living in a familiar environment reduces the stress of adapting to a new culture or community. For example, many people prefer to remain in small towns where they know their neighbours and feel safe.
However, there are also some disadvantages. Staying in the same place may limit career opportunities, especially if the local job market is small. In addition, people may miss the chance to experience different cultures, meet new people, and develop greater independence. For instance, those who move to large cities often gain better employment prospects and broader life experiences.
In conclusion, although people often remain near their birthplace because of family ties, familiarity, and stable employment, this choice has both benefits and drawbacks. While it provides emotional support and stability, it may also restrict personal growth and career development. Therefore, individuals should decide based on their personal circumstances and long-term goals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt: reasons for staying, advantages, and disadvantages. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. For instance, the discussion on family support and career limitations provides a balanced view. The position is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific, perhaps personal or hypothetical, examples to further illustrate your points, as the current examples are somewhat general. Overall, the response is well-structured and fully satisfies the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'One of the main reasons,' 'In addition,' 'Firstly,' and 'However,' to guide the reader through your arguments. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the text. The flow between sentences is smooth, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words. This demonstrates a high level of control over the structure of the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'emotional support,' 'stable jobs,' 'relocation unnecessary,' and 'career development' are used accurately and appropriately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band score. The word choice is consistently correct, and there are no spelling errors. To improve, try incorporating more nuanced collocations or academic synonyms to elevate the tone of your writing further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'while others prefer to move' and 'which provides a sense of security.' The grammar is highly accurate, with very few errors, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which indicates a strong command of English grammar. To reach the highest bands, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as inverted sentences or more sophisticated conditional forms, to demonstrate even greater flexibility.
