Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt: reasons for staying in one's birthplace, as well as the advantages and disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, such as family bonding and cultural connection for advantages, and limited career growth for disadvantages. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For example, the explanation of cultural roots is quite brief and could be better supported with more nuanced analysis. While the position is clear, the essay would benefit from more depth in the arguments to move beyond a basic level of explanation. Overall, it meets the requirements of the task but lacks the detailed elaboration expected at higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'One major advantage', 'Another benefit', and 'However', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing (e.g., 'This can lead to create bonding'). Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent enough to follow the writer's argument without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'rapidly evolving' and 'social diversity', but there are also instances of imprecise word choice or awkward collocations, such as 'upbringings held' instead of 'upbringing' or 'hospitality nature' instead of 'hospitable nature'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on fairly common words. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and a wider variety of topic-specific terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and prepositions (e.g., 'is become popular', 'to stay close to where your upbringings held', 'help in to get attached'). These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, although they do not significantly impede communication. The control of complex structures is inconsistent, with several instances of incorrect verb patterns after 'help' or 'lead to'. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and correct prepositional usage would improve the accuracy significantly.
