Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, more people choose to live their lives nearer to the place which they were born. This is happening because of the comfort and close relation with their loved ones. This essay will explore the benefits and drawbacks of this behavior, and the reasons behind it.

One of the main reasons why people spend most of their lives living close to the birthplace is that strong relationship with the family and friends. They do not want to break the ties with the closed ones, and they want to present their when their loved ones faces challenges. For example, if something happened to their parents, they want to present their personally and help them in all ways they could. Moreover, people do not want to come out of their comfort zones and routines. They will be familiar with the places, streets, amenities, foods and road, which lead them to live in a comfortable and traditional life.

The advantage by choosing this type of life is people know their culture and traditional roots. For instance, children growing in their hometown will be knowing about their historic roots than the ones growing in abroad. This will help them to keep their culture and festivals.

The disadvantage of staying in ones birthplace is that the employment opportunities will be less. The local places will have less industrial development and will lack high paying jobs. As a result, a person has to be satisfied with the job that they get, and have to adjust their life with the normal salary. In addition, they will not get promotion because of the small office.

To conclude, some people are trying to live near to their birthplace because of the relationship and comfortability. It will help them to keep up their tradition and culture, while the major con is that they will loose their vast opportunities in their professional life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt: reasons for staying in one's birthplace, and the advantages and disadvantages. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why people stay—'comfort zones and routines'—is a good point but could be expanded with more specific detail. Similarly, the advantages and disadvantages are presented, but the arguments remain at a surface level. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more depth to your supporting examples, such as explaining the specific psychological impact of staying in a familiar environment versus the long-term career consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'To conclude', which help the flow of the text. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the progression could be smoother. For example, the transition between the advantages and disadvantages could be more sophisticated. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'the ones growing in abroad', which is grammatically awkward and affects the flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'industrial development' and 'professional life'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'comfortability' (instead of 'comfort'), 'loose' (instead of 'lose'), and 'growing in abroad' (instead of 'growing up abroad'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on collocations and ensure you are using the correct word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the place which they were born' (should be 'where'), 'present their' (should be 'present themselves'), and 'the ones growing in abroad'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your points. To achieve a higher band, you need to increase the frequency of error-free sentences and work on the accuracy of your complex structures, particularly with relative clauses and verb-object agreement.
