Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate regarding people who spent a major part of their lives living close to where they were born. There are many reasons for people to stay close to their birthplaces such as familiarity and convenience. This essay will discuss both advantages and disadvantages of this development.

One of the most compelling advantage of this development is affliation to the place of birth. It is a human nature to love and feel attracted to where they are born and have spent most part of their childhood. It makes people feel connected to their roots and culture which brings a sense of security and safety. Moreover, people are used to the places around and cherish those memories by visiting again. Although young generation is ready to come out of their shell, usually older ones prefer to hold onto their values by sticking to old places.

On the other hand, one should be open to visit new places and embrace changes in the lifestyle. Staying in the same place for years can decrease work or study opportunities while travelling brings novelty and understanding of cultural diversity. Moreover, moving to new places and exploring nature can effect the mental health positively. However, many people are introvert and feel uncertain to take the risk of exploring and investing in new places.

In conclusion, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages and one should have an open approach where they are ready to relocate and move to different cities or even countries. This is both reasonable and beneficial.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: reasons, advantages, and disadvantages. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the reasons for staying are mentioned briefly as 'familiarity and convenience' but are not deeply explored. The advantages and disadvantages are presented, but the arguments lack specific examples or detailed elaboration to fully support the points made. The position is clear throughout, but the essay would benefit from more depth in the analysis of the 'reasons' section to reach a higher band. The conclusion provides a clear summary of the writer's stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Although', and 'On the other hand' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother in some places to improve the overall flow. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'compelling', 'affiliation', and 'cultural diversity'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'effect the mental health' (should be 'affect') and 'one of the most compelling advantage' (should be 'advantages'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'people who spent' (should be 'spend' or 'have spent'), 'It is a human nature' (should be 'It is human nature'), and 'many people are introvert' (should be 'introverted'). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are occasional slips. While the errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and adjectives.
