Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people wants to stay at the places that are nearby their birthplace. Although strong connections and similar culture are the reasons behind the scenario, from my standpoint, this trend brings both positive and negative impacts to human by offering them convenient lifestyle however, degrading their personal growth, respectively.

One of the major reasons why individuals are so unwilling to leave behind their birthplaces is strong connectivity with their community. Sticking to one place helps people gain professional opportunities easily because of the connections they have. It also eases their work life struggles as they have been the part of the same environment since childhood. Another consideration is cultural identity. Same neighborhood allows a person to have a cultural identity which is missing in those who move away from their hometowns for work or study purposes. All of these things provide a person a sense of comfort that they are living their lives the way they want.

On the optimistic side, this trend is of high benefits for attaining a comfortable and stress free lifestyle. People living nearby their hometowns not only has better connections but also a better hand in dealing with challenging circumstance owing to their strong bonding with their kins. This assurance provides them a sense of relief which is usually missing in migrated residents. To cite an example, in countryside, everyone have bond with each other as they have community presence on events, however, that lacks in towns where most people are migrants for either educational or professional purposes. This makes a significant difference in the lifestyle of the two categories of individuals.

On the negative side, the primary drawback of staying in hometowns throughout their lives is restricted personal growth. Individuals with no outside exposure are often less confident, lacks skills like communication, teamwork, collaboration and others; which hinder their personal development. To illustrate, a new comer to any foreign nation faces hardship in their initial days owing to their no outside world exposure, but the same person after a few years in that place becomes more confident, resilient and strong. The change in environment brings out the best from them. Therefore, getting out of ones comfort zones is really crucial to achieve something bigger in life.

Taking everything into account, I finally conclude that strong community connections and culture are the reasons people want to reside at their home towns for their entire lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: reasons for staying in one's birthplace, and the advantages and disadvantages. The position is clear from the introduction. Ideas are generally well-developed, such as the discussion on professional connections and the psychological benefits of community. However, some points could be more deeply explored; for instance, the 'cultural identity' point is mentioned but not fully expanded upon with a concrete example. The structure is logical, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the topic throughout. Overall, it meets the requirements for a Band 7, as all parts are addressed with relevant supporting ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the reasons, advantages, and disadvantages. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Another consideration', 'On the optimistic side', and 'To illustrate' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is a bit repetitive. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is clear, and the conclusion provides a brief summary of the main points. The overall coherence is sufficient to earn a Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific vocabulary like 'professional opportunities', 'cultural identity', and 'resilient'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'better hand in dealing with' instead of 'better equipped to deal with', and 'community presence on events' which is slightly unnatural. While the student attempts to use less common items, the precision is not consistent enough for a higher band. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but lacks the sophistication and natural collocation expected at Band 8.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Many people wants', 'everyone have bond', 'individuals... lacks skills'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some minor issues with comma usage. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but the control is not consistent. Given the frequency of errors in basic grammar, the score reflects a solid Band 6 performance.
