Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt: reasons, advantages, and disadvantages. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation of why people stay is limited to 'comfort' and 'family business,' and the discussion of advantages and disadvantages lacks depth. The conclusion is also underdeveloped, failing to summarize the main points effectively. While the position is clear, the ideas could be extended with more specific examples or nuanced reasoning to reach a higher band. The response meets the requirements but remains at a basic level of analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with,' 'Additionally,' and 'On the contrary.' However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as the awkward transition in the conclusion: 'although there are some reasons behind it. However, some advantages...' This creates a fragmented flow. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, and the progression of ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the overall cohesion requires more sophisticated linking to achieve a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choices or incorrect collocations, such as 'wedded with this thinking,' 'feeling of seekness' (likely meaning homesickness), and 'fame and name.' The range is limited, and the student relies on basic phrasing. To improve, the student should focus on using more natural collocations and a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of flexibility and the presence of errors in word choice prevent a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'where they born and brought' (missing auxiliary verbs), 'living in a same place,' and 'people who feel attach.' Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several run-on sentences and missing articles. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. The student needs to focus on subject-verb agreement, correct verb forms, and the proper use of articles to improve accuracy and range.
