Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is irrefuttable that a majority of people continue to live near their hometown for most of their lives. While there are various causes behind this phenomenon such as taking care of their assets and lack of confidence, I believe that this trend brings both advantages and disadvantages.

There are several reasons why this is happening. The major one is that taking care of the invaluable property received from ancestors as an inheritance. For example, many people get a house, business, land or jewellery from their parents as a gift which hold a sentimental value in their life. As they have unforgettable memories attached to these things and their birth place, they want to spend their whole life with them. Moreover, if individuals have been earning adequate income in their areas, they might not want to take the risk of moving to an unknown place where they have to start from scratch. Hence, the fear of failure makes it difficult for people to move somewhere else.

Despite the fact that this trend has both positive and negative impact, the major benefit is the strong connections with society members results in trust and respect among people which ultimately leads to a peaceful lifestyle. To exemplify, a family can easily leave their children with their neighbours while going for a short trip if they have long-lasting relationships with each other. Therefore, the emotional support from closed ones makes it easy for someone to face the difficult phase of their life. In contrast, individuals who do not move out of their cities may miss numerous career opportunities. This is because, staying at the same place limits the employment avenues due to which people may fall behind in their life in this competitive world.

In conclusion, enormous factors have conributed to this situation such as satying close to their familial assets and hesitation to move in unknown area. Although spending considerbale time at same place makes people feel secure due to trustworthy community, it may lead to a slower career growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt: reasons, advantages, and disadvantages are all covered. The position is clear throughout the essay. Ideas are generally well-developed, such as the explanation of inheriting property and the social benefits of staying in one's hometown. However, some points could be extended further to reach a higher band; for instance, the disadvantage regarding career opportunities is mentioned but could be supported with a more specific example to add depth. Overall, the response is focused and relevant, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Despite the fact that', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the prompt. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall coherence, but the current structure is clear and functional.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'invaluable property', 'sentimental value', and 'employment avenues' show a good grasp of topic-specific language. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'conributed', 'satying', and 'considerbale', which are likely slips rather than a lack of knowledge. The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the context, though the use of more idiomatic or less common collocations would elevate the score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and complex structures are attempted, such as 'Despite the fact that this trend has both positive and negative impact'. However, there are occasional grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'results in trust' (should be 'resulting in trust') and 'move in unknown area' (should be 'move to an unknown area'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Punctuation is generally accurate.
