Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, living close to one's birthplace has become an increasingly debated issue. People hold different views on this matter because it can significantly affect both individuals and society. While there are reasonable arguments surrounding this issue, I believe that living near one's birthplace can provide important benefits, although it also has some disadvantages. This essay will examine the key aspects of this topic.

To begin with, one important point is that people often remain near their birthplace because of strong family relationships and familiarity with the local area. This is particularly significant because it can affect people's lives in several ways and may influence their future opportunities. For example, individuals can receive regular support from relatives while continuing to live in a familiar community. Therefore, this aspect should be carefully considered when evaluating the issue.

Furthermore, another significant point is that living close to one's birthplace can provide emotional and financial support. This can have an important influence on individuals as well as the wider community. For instance, parents can help their children with childcare and other daily responsibilities. Consequently, this factor should also be taken into consideration when examining the overall situation.

However, it is also important to consider that staying in the same area can limit employment opportunities and new experiences. This point deserves consideration, as different people may have different needs and circumstances. Nevertheless, I believe that a balanced and practical approach can help address these concerns while achieving positive outcomes.

In conclusion, I believe that living near one's birthplace can be beneficial despite having certain disadvantages. This is mainly because family connections provide valuable support and living nearby can reduce daily difficulties. Taking these factors into consideration, an appropriate approach can produce better outcomes for both individuals and society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the reasons why people live close to their birthplace and the associated advantages and disadvantages. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas tends to be somewhat repetitive and generic, relying on broad statements rather than fully extended, specific arguments or concrete personal examples. For instance, the discussion on family support is repeated across paragraphs without introducing distinct facets. While the task is adequately addressed, the ideas would benefit from deeper elaboration to reach a higher band level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a logical overall organisation with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as reasons, advantages, and disadvantages. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences and paragraphs, as seen with phrases like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'However'. Nevertheless, the progression at times feels mechanical due to formulaic transitions and repetitive concluding remarks for each body paragraph, such as 'this aspect should be carefully considered'. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow could be more natural and seamless.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate and serves the purpose of the task reasonably well, featuring appropriate general and topic-related terms like 'birthplace', 'employment opportunities', and 'family relationships'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'significantly affect' and 'taken into consideration', but the range remains somewhat restricted and repetitive throughout the essay. There are no major spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, but the lack of precise, sophisticated lexical items prevents the response from achieving a higher score in this category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising structures such as subordinate clauses ('while continuing to live', 'because family connections provide'). There is a good level of grammatical accuracy, with many error-free sentences, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. Errors are very rare, and the control over basic and moderately complex structures is solid. However, the repertoire of complex syntactic structures is somewhat limited, preventing the grammar score from reaching the band 7 threshold, which requires a wider variety of complex sentence types.
