Student answer (Band 6.5)
Many people choose to spend their entire lives in or around the place where they were born. This can be attributed to several factors, particularly strong family ties, familiarity with the local environment and established employment opportunities. Although remaining in one's hometown has several benefits, it can also have certain disadvantages.
One major reason people remain close to their birthplace is their connection with family and friends. They may want to stay near their parents, relatives and childhood friends, particularly if they have responsibilities towards elderly family members. In addition, people are generally familiar with the local culture, language and community, which can provide them with a strong sense of security and belonging. Some may also have stable employment or a family business in the area, making relocation unnecessary.
There are several advantages to this lifestyle. Living near family allows people to receive emotional and practical support when needed. They may also have a well-established social network, which can make everyday life more enjoyable. However, staying in one place may limit people's opportunities. Smaller towns, for example, may offer fewer career prospects and educational opportunities than major cities. Furthermore, people who rarely move away may have less exposure to different cultures and ways of life.
In conclusion, family connections, familiarity and employment are among the main reasons people remain near their birthplace. While this can provide stability and strong social support, it may also restrict career opportunities and exposure to new experiences.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task, examining the reasons why people remain near their birthplace, as well as the associated advantages and disadvantages. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are relevant and supported with logical explanations, such as mentioning employment opportunities and social support networks. However, there is a penalty for length because the response contains 242 words, falling slightly short of the 250-word minimum requirement. This minor under-length impacts full task development and keeps the score at a band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt, such as reasons in the second paragraph and advantages and disadvantages in the third. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, as seen in phrases like 'In addition,' 'There are several advantages,' and 'Furthermore.' Referencing is clear and logical throughout, resulting in a solid performance in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms such as 'established employment opportunities,' 'relocation unnecessary,' and 'social network.' There are also some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'attributed to' and 'prospects.' Word choices are generally appropriate and communication is not impeded at any point. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout. While the lexical range is sufficient for a band 6.0 or 7.0, it remains fairly standard rather than showcasing truly flexible or sophisticated uncommon items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or participial clauses such as 'making relocation unnecessary' and 'particularly if they have responsibilities towards elderly family members.' The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is handled well. While there are no major errors that impede communication, the range of complex grammatical structures remains somewhat restrained, which aligns well with the descriptors for a solid band 6.5.
