Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The student attempts to address all parts of the prompt, mentioning reasons why people stay close to their birthplace, alongside some advantages and disadvantages. However, the response is severely incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence with only 166 words written, which is well below the 250-word minimum requirement. This under-length impacts the development of ideas, as the points regarding reasons, advantages, and disadvantages are only superficially touched upon rather than fully extended and supported. For instance, the mention of children forgetting cultural values is introduced but not properly expanded. Consequently, the task cannot be fully satisfied, resulting in a low score for this criterion due to the lack of adequate word count and idea development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The essay attempts a basic paragraph structure, introducing the introduction, reasons, and advantages/disadvantages sections using simple cohesive markers such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Additionally'. However, overall coherence suffers greatly because the text cuts off abruptly in the third paragraph ('Morever, they'). Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'As this thing is common in develop countries', where the antecedent is vague. Paragraphing is initiated but not maintained effectively due to the premature ending of the response. Overall progression is hindered by the lack of completion and underdeveloped argumentation, though a rudimentary framework of logical organization is visible at the sentence level.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate basic vocabulary for simple communication, such as 'comfort', 'roots', 'culture', and 'family'. There are several lexical and word choice errors, such as 'develop countries' instead of 'developed countries', 'truely' instead of 'truly', and 'alot' instead of 'a lot'. The student attempts some less common expressions like 'step out from their comfort zone', but the range remains quite limited and repetitive. Vocabulary errors do not completely impede communication in the sentences that are finished, but the overall lexical resource is restricted by the short length and basic phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing dependent clauses such as 'if their children will go outside, they will forget their cultural values'. However, there are notable grammatical errors throughout, including tense and modal verb inaccuracies like 'if their children will go outside' (first conditional error) and 'spend their most of the time'. Punctuation and sentence formation are also affected, culminating in an unfinished final sentence that leaves a grammatical structure dangling. While some simple sentences are formed correctly, the frequency of errors and the incomplete nature of the text keep the grammatical rating in the lower band range.
