Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing reasons for living close to one's birthplace as well as the associated advantages and disadvantages. However, there are significant issues regarding task fulfilment. Firstly, the response is cut off mid-sentence in the conclusion, leaving the final thought incomplete. Secondly, as noted in the length check, the essay falls short of the 250-word minimum, containing only 225 words. This under-length impacts the full development of ideas, particularly in the discussion of advantages and disadvantages where explanations remain somewhat superficial. For example, the advantage is briefly attributed to comfort and familiarity, while the disadvantage touches upon limited growth opportunities. Because the ideas are underdeveloped and the word count requirement is not met, the task achievement is constrained to a band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organization with an introduction, body paragraphs featuring transition signals such as 'To begin with' and 'Moreover', and an attempted conclusion. However, the overall progression is hindered by poor sentence construction and mechanical linking. Paragraphing is attempted, but the text lacks smooth transitions between ideas, and the run-on nature of several sentences makes the logical flow disjointed. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as in the opening sentence where the phrase 'which if will discuss' creates a confusing and broken cohesive path. While paragraphing is visually present, the internal cohesion within sentences and clauses is frequently faulty or inaccurate. This corresponds to the band 5.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate vocabulary for discussing a familiar topic, using words like 'birthplace', 'emotionally connected', 'farmers', and 'enviornment'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and spelling mistakes throughout the text, such as 'belivesd', 'use to it' instead of 'used to it', 'everthing', and 'carrier' instead of 'career'. The range of vocabulary is rather basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms. Attempts at less common phrases are marred by collocation errors, such as 'growing opportunities' instead of 'career or growth opportunities'. These frequent errors and the restricted lexical range place this criterion firmly at band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. Many sentences are overly long, poorly punctuated, and grammatically flawed, such as the opening sentence which suffers from severe structural confusion: 'In recent times, it is belivesd by the group of individuals that most people live around the area of their birthplace which may be due to some reasons and it can have some merits as well as demerits with it which if will discuss in further paragraphs.' Furthermore, there are frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and article usage, such as 'may because they love' and 'at any new place'. These frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect band 5.0 performance.
